  • Super Castlevania 4 was the first Castlevania game to be featured on the "Brand New" Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Of course, this had a lot riding on it, as that three Castlevanias had been made with the exact same theory and engine for the NES systems, and much innovation wasnt needed. After all, why would you work very hard on remaking an engine that everyone fell in love with?

This game didnt have a premade engine, so it was back to the drawing board for the Konami crew. Thankfully, they didnt do anything strange or different, because for the most part the game is what everyone has been used to for the last three Castlevanias. Whip upgrades, health, hearts to use secondary weapons.. you get the drill.

This game is your typical platformer, and I really don't know how to describe it otherwise. The game is basically broken down into sections of Dracula's Castle, and you've basically got the job of going and destroying Dracula (Go figure).

One issue I have with this game which tends to follow any SNES platformer is there are times in which you'll be super-convinced that you own the d*** game, and die in the most ignorant ways. To name, places where you die for no reason, places where you fall and die because a platform that was supposed to be solid slipped and let you fall, etc etc....

However, the cheapness of this game doesnt really detract from it. A lot of people complain that games now are too easy, and this game by far doesnt give you any leeway. The first few levels are pretty much a cakewalk, but there will be times in which you want to take the controller, break it over your knee, and shove it up whoever developed the game's rear. But that's just me.

Other than that, there isnt much to say about this game. Being as its just more like a remake than a real game with a complex story, I felt much more like it was an arcade game than a real game. Compared to the Castlevania games out for the Game Boy Advance, a similarly equipped system, this game is lacking. However, you have to remember that story in most respects was left to RPGs in that time frame, and most people never worried about story in their adventure games.

Overall, I give this game two stars. I'd recommend anyone who is a major fan of platformers, Castlevania, or just looking for a hard game to pick this up- but people used to the Game Boy Advance form of Castlevania will be much lost in the dust.
