  • Pre-launch analysis of the XBOX 360

    by Kirk, 2005-11-14
Through over a decade in gaming, I've seen the come and fall of some hardcore systems. The NES. The SNES. The Playstation. The Playstation 2. The XBOX. And now, we're all sitting on what could potentially be one of the biggest console launches of all time:

    The XBOX 360

Okay, I've gotten in to some secret info, into some insider information, and will publish some sutff here you will not see on ANY OTHER VIDEO GAME WEBSITE. It helps when you're a dirty underground-loving whore. So, time to give some information about the 360 you might, and probably don't, know.

    1. The XBOX 360 runs on DirectX 9 Framework, and you could have had most of the dev kit months ago.

Yep. The XBOX itself was famous for being run on the somewhat stellar DirectX framework (Get it? DirectXBox?). Now, Microsoft has been pushing themselves very hard to try to get DirectX in the market. They've been competing with OpenGL for a good while now, and they're trying to find the footwork that'll take them over those opensource bastards. Kinda like how they're trying (and failing) to take out Mozilla Firefox.

Annnnyway, what does this mean? A good portion of the dev kit was included with the DirectX SDK downloadable on Microsoft's website. No, I'm not talking about the simple DirectX stuff. Interestingly enough, the package currently includes some sound tools that do some interesting stuff with Polyphony sound. You know how Mike was raving about all the different sounds? This is pretty much what helped that.

Of course, you can go download this stuff at www.microsoft.com, though I doubt you can find much from it other than a stupid developement kit for C++ers. I don't like programming with DirectX anyway.
