OK, lets get to the real meat of what's going on here. Oh wait, I'm sorry, I'm too lazy to translate the ENDLESS PAGES OF TEXT THAT ACCOMPANY THIS GAME. Therefore, from now on, the following review is in "Lazy-ass Gaijin Mode" where I'll just pretend I know what's going on and not do any translation work whatsoever. I've seen the Tokimeki Memorial anime, so I'll just pretend like that's what's going on. I think.
This is some red haired chick that talks to you, I'd presume a friend. Of course, like any good dating sim, she falls under the catagory of "The friend that has a crush on you", except in this game you don't screw her brains out.
Later after she runs her mouth, you see other people: Your stereotypical blonde haired American friend that magically speaks perfect japanese, and your stereotypical long blonde haired Man(?) that has some sort of attitude with you. Personally, I'd love the Doom HUD to pop up and shoot at his face so he'd stop trying to be the next Gackt, but that's violent, and that's not how you have sex with red haired girls in video games.
Now we get to the bulk of the game. Stat building. Now, this is kinda a touchy subject with me. I love RPGs to death. I'll sit there with Final Fantasy 1's "Create A Party" system and debate over if I should have a Red Mage or a Theif. I'd wear a "I roll 20s" T-shirt if I didnt play tabletop RPGs and if it somehow connected to the console RPGs I love. I'm like that.
So what about these systems? Well, I'm going to sit here and say, on the internet of all places, a deep secret of mine: I like this kinda build-up system. Of course, I've played more intuitive games where you schedule out the day and it follows through instead of making you choose 24/7, but that's no biggie for me. This is kinda fun, if it makes you happy. Like any other dating sim on the planet, you essentially have your skills broken down into the following catagories:
Physical Strength
Intelligence (Usually broken down into like Math and Literature, or the like)
Artistic Ability
Physical Looks
Charm (Sometimes it and Physical Looks go together)
Relationship building (To include dating, going to school, calling people, etc)
and Sleep
Essentilly, you either have "Turns" through the day, which basically allow you to do so many of those tasks (Sleep usually goes to the next day, however), or it gives you "Stamina Points" to complete them with. Of course, every girl has her preference, and you basically have to either pick one or two girls that pick your dominant trait (The one your auto-fire gamepad kept hitting), or balance all your traits out perfectly to get every girl.
It seems in Tokimeki Memoria(ru)l, you basically have the turn based genre. Of course, being as you are a Junior/High School student, you have to go to school, but other than that, you have free reign.
The real scary part about this is that I wonder where my character's parents are. Think about it. All of a sudden your son starts looking in the mirror obsessively while giving himself the "Victory" sign:
And sometimes, he goes out in homosexual jogging shorts and gives himself a Victory sign while standing in the middle of a road:
