I'm going to diverge here for a little while and go on the subject of monitors. Obviously, if you have a s***ty monitor, you're gonna feel very limited as to what you can do on your PC. Many people forget that when it comes down to it, there are four interface peripherals, and every single one the typical gamer tends to ignore.
In level of importance:
4. Speakers
3. Mouse
2. Keyboard
1. Monitor
Now, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is required to build a decent gaming rig. I don't think you want to game without a mouse. I doubt you want to game without any sound. And I seriously doubt you want to game without seeing a d*** thing.
So why do people ignore these so much? Is a $5 really going to give you that same harrumph as spending a little more on a $20 one? Granted that keyboards really don't have much difference to them, but how in the HELL can someone go out and buy a $5000+ PC and go
"Oh, I'll just buy a default ball-driven mouse, they're cheap".
Come on. And the LAST thing you want to skimp on is the d***ed monitor. Why in the hell do you want to be looking at a s***ty screen for a year or two before you break down and buy a better one?
Okay, now lets look at the options. It really breaks down into three options: LCD, CRT, and Plasma TV.
