Quake without whimsy.
Deathmatch Classic was a modification for the Half Life engine back when it was popular that basically copied id's Quake series. Instead of going for the strategic "Slow" combat of games like Counter Strike, they decided to basically crank everyone's running speed up, weapon speed up, and basically throw out all sorts of limiting rules to the point people can jump like little freaking rabbits.
The game itself isnt BAD as much as it is just plain, as I steal this line from Mike, brainless. I really can't get into detail much on this game, mainly because there isnt detail at all. You run around, hunting for the electric shock thing or the rocket launcher, and shoot everything and anything that moves. Literally, you never really get a good grasp of the map you're on, the time left in the game, or even how much ammo or health you have- you just run around shooting s*** like a maniac on crack. What really amazes me about this game is the few players playing it. Granted everyone's playing Counter Strike, but you'd think that this would get a hardcore following like Team Fortress Classic does. Of course, then you have to remember that if people want to play Quake, they play Quake, not DMC, so its understandable. ![]() Online, I found about 10 servers constituting about 2 or 3 players each. Some would have 6 or higher, but then some would have like 1, so it all balances itself out. What really amazes me is how BAD the players are. For example: Mike got on for his first try on the game ever and dominated 15 kills over the next highest ranked character (Mike won the whole game with 30+ kills while everyone else on the server had about 10). I didnt believe it, and I tried today to see if it was hidden Quake-ing skill in Mike, or if it was bad gamers. No offence to Mike, but I have never had a server play "KILLING SPREE" more often about ME. I bunny hop, grab a rocket launcher, and basically eliminate anythiong. I came into a game where people had been playing for an HOUR with the leader having 30 kills and I toasted his reign in 3 minutes flat. I'm not kidding. Oh, and really quickly I'll note that the only worthwhile weapons in this game are the Rocket Launcher and the thing that shoots electric beams. Anything else is basically a death sentence. Talk about unbalanced... but, then again, I'm thinking Counter Strike's overly nice interface where a pistoled CT can take out an AK-47ed Terrorist rather easily. ![]() Overall, this game deserves some credit, but then again not so much. Its a good idea to port a quick game to the Half Life engine, which has needed a fastpaced game. Its a good idea to be nice to id and actually SAY on the game that it's a tribute to them. Its a good idea to allow the characters from Half Life in it so it doesnt feel out of place. But the game still is simplistic and even I, the person who sucks at CS like a $5 whore sucks innapropriately, mastered the game in 3 minutes.
