  • Like BF1942, only slightly better

  • Everyone knows that Battlefield 1942 is basically one big TKer's arena. The whole idea of Battlefield 1942 and its subsequent sequels and brothers was to put people in an online shooter situation like Counter Strike and set them to achieve basic goals, but give them an extensive amount of vehicles to control.

Desert Combat is a mod. It is not a completely seperate game from the Battlefield series. In fact, if you really look at it, Desert Combat is more of a skin and sounpack for Battlefield 1942 than anything else. Granted it has new maps and different classes, but it still does not want to break that horrific Battlefield 1942 setup of the game.

The best part of Desert Combat is the changed classes. One of my bigger gripes with Battlefield 1942 was there wasnt a class that fit me in my happy niche- I like to snipe a little bit, and I like to run around and shoot like a faggot a little bit. The new "Special Ops" class fits me like a glove, where I can systematically take out enemies like a true trooper now, instead of going all out sniper or all out gun-metal-head. Of course, there's the realization that all the classes are essential revamps of the old classes, and you could reasonably break down each class in Desert Combat into its brother class in Battlefield.

Of course, the vehicles are nice too. This time, you feel less oldsie as you get to run around with gun-laden choppers, which make things quite fun in the battlefield. Then, you have your typical planes, obviously revamped only in style, not in substance. Naturally, these essential reskins don't do much to keep your typical planetard from running into a plane, getting into the air, jumping out and parachuting to whereverthehell he wants to go while he leaves a perfectly good plane (and possibly a perfectly good gunner) to careen into the ground.

The game still falls into two types of players- the people who are camping, and the people who aren't. The people who camp with a sniper rifle of course eliminate everyone and anyone who is running around on foot. Then, anyone in a vehicle has to worry about rockettards (a new terminology from me) running around lobbing s***ty missiles their way. And don't forget your typical vehicletard running around with the carbomb mod on blowing everyone, including his teammates, to hell.

Something needs to be said about the Carbomb mod. This actually makes me feel like I'm playing an actual Desert Storm-ish game, because I'm always freaking worried about that strange truck careening toward me. Natrually, its a little racist to assume that the "Enemy Forces" use carbombs, but it's pretty realistic nonetheless. Of course, this leads to a new genre of tard, who go on suicide missions, running the car straight into enemy bases, honking the horn to activate the bomb, and blowing himself and the base into kingdom come.

However, I can't be too mean to this game. The people who made this game at least tried to fix some of the more pertinent issues that occur with Desert Combat, but all the fixes in the world can't keep that newbie from running around slamming your planes into your own base.

The whole Battlefield series is one big prankster's joy, however. Nothing is funnier than taking a cruise ship and running it off the map, or taking a helicopter and landing it on your own men. You'll get cussed at, but who cares- that's what the internet's for.
