  • Devil May Suck

  • Devil May Cry was a big freaking hit. It was the perfect blend of action, style, controls, and general gameplay. I personally love the game to death, and really hope that when I get my hands on Devil May Cry 3, I'll love it just as much.

Capcom, the SAME DAMN PEOPLE that made Devil May Cry, made Chaos Legion- a game a lot like Devil May Cry, but not enough to call a direct connection. Its more akin to the "Dynasty Warriors" series- One Man Vs. World kinda thing. All the demons run at you, you slay them, bonus points! Its been done before, and it'll probably never stop.

And, this might be a bad thing. Chaos Legion suffers from a horrible storyline, failed acting, shallow characters, repetitive gameplay, boring controls... its like a laundry list of horrific things. And why not- the game just feels cheap. This game feels EXACTLY like what you would expect as a beta freely downloadable online rather than a full out extensive game.

For the gameplay, its too repetitive and boring. The ONLY button for using your sword is the Square button- basically making it the most pressed button. Then, you can summon "Legions", little allies that do little to no damage to enemies, and when they DO do damage, they end up dying anyway. Overall, boring.

Then, for the story. It seems as if Capcom tried a film noir-ish dark gothic story, but it ends up being about as shallow as a puddle. Then, they try making dark characters like the Main Character, which (Ironically like Devil May Cry), are more laughable than admirable. Overacting abounds in a generic run of the mill story that makes little sense.

The graphics are exactly what you would expect out of a cheap PS2 game. While the textures are pretty decent, the models and actual 3D in the game fall short. This seems to be a common thread in all PS2 games, except this game makes no effort to mask it. If you've played an old PS2 game, you'll know what I'm talking about- jaggy edges, bad models, somewhat decent textures, and the like.

The only good part about this game comes in the package of game music. Capcom usually does pretty decent music, and this game is do different, giving a variety of action/techno/goth soundtracks. I actually like listening to the soundtrack more than I like playing the game- a good sign that this game actually sucks.

Overall, this game gets one star. I'm not sure why I would not give it the mushroom other than the fact that I like the ingame music, and that's a long stretch for saving it from absolute gaming hell. Do NOT buy this game unless you know what you're buying, because I can honestly say this was a big waste of my $50. Go buy Devil May Cry instead- this game doesnt cut it.
