  • Everyone's pretty much sick and tired of Shooter games about World War 2. It just is that way: companies tend to think that people want to recreate wars. Instead of making a game about Desert Storm, which would be controversial, or Vietnam, which would be unpopular, they usually fall back on World War 2- a war that in history seems pretty well supported by the American public.

Day of Defeat is simply a WW2 mod for Half Life. If you havent gotten the pattern that I play a lot of Half Life mods yet, you're new to the site- Half Life mods are free, fun, and run on virtually any system. Playing one is easy, and the engine rarely, if ever, changes.

Day of Defeat might be one of the harder mods to get used to. Being the only game with the "Prone" ability, and being as all the guns are even more innacurate than in Counter-Strike, its obvious that a level of ability needs to be had before you begin winning this game. For example, most of my kills in this game resort to "Hide in hole. Wait for enemy. Enemy passes by, unload rifle on them. Repeat". Generally, its a quick-draw game- getting shot makes you recoil, making aim even worse, meaning the person who gets shot first is basically screwed, ignoring the fact there's little to no health anyway.

The game features the ability to play either the Axis or the Allies. The Allies feature your traditional weapons (Crappy ones), while the Axis feature german weapons (Also crappy). Though, I will admit, using the Luger as an Axis has its own brand of awesome.

As for the graphics, this might be considered one of the more "Mid Range" Half Life games. While its not as graphically beautiful as the updated CS models or some fan made maps you'll see in many of the mods, it is great compared to most generic maps and models you usually see. They made sure to not do the "Steal textures from Half Life and re-use them" cliche, which overall does much better than usual.

The gameplay is a little strange to get used to. To be honest, while games like CS, Half Life, Zombie Panic, Brain Bread, and the like tend to feel the same when you control them, DoD feels a bit too floaty... or something. The game uses a "Stamina" system which tends to annoy me more than it does good- I don't see what it does good to the game other than restrict you from bunny hopping.

Overall, this game might be considered to border on "Too real". Other games like CS tend to perfectly balance realism and falsity, while this tends to be too real and makes it less fun than it could be. Then again, this might be perfect for people who like a more restricted for gameplay.
