  • 8 GAMES IN ONE OH MY GOD

  • Author: Kirk
  • When someone says "Kirby" to me, I just sometimes want to puke. Why the hell that stupid pink thing ever got beyond the drawing board is beyond me. Its childish, simple, and pretty much a dead series now. However, the people who do the Kirby games sometimes come out with a decent Kirby game, so I can't complain too much. And, in the common vein that "All SNES games are essentially good, all Gamecube games are essentially bad", Kirby Superstar isnt bad.

Here's the theory: Instead of making one long complex Kirby game, why not make a bunch of little games and put them together in a pack? I think this was a smart move, being as most Kirby gamers arent looking for an RPG sized Kirby game. Rather, this game links together 8 games in a mishmash of different styles, gameplay, and difficulty.

Rather than breaking down every single game and pretending like they are different enough to warrant it, I'm (for the most part) going to group them all together in a rasist way. For the most part, this game is a Kirby game- suck it up, swallow it, turn into it, etc- but there are some decent games in this.

The one game that I think was the best overall was the game (mini-game?) "Milky Way Wishes". Instead of letting you suck up anything and everything, it makes it more complex by not letting you transform into anything. Instead, when you find a little icon, you have that ability, permanently- it allows you to hit START or X and switch abilities at any time. While this seems annoying and non-kirby ish, I think it fits the bill of an old school Action/RPG, and really feels like it fits the series.

The other games I wouldnt call amazing. Most of those games are traditional Kirby games, no matter how you look at them. The "Meta Knight" one is pretty fun, as well as the other games, but I wouldnt ever really consider them to be super-fun. In addition to these Kirby games, there are games like the Arena and the Samurai game, both of which are very very shallow, and fall under the "RPG Mini-game" catagory.

I do make this out to be a lackluster package, and it is not. This is a perfect game to pick up if you're bored and have a friend- it has multiplayer through all of the games. For example, in the Kirby style games, you can turn your ability into a second player of that ability. Second player die? Respawn him. Its essentially making a body shield, but your second player doesnt have to know that. Of course, the game can control this shield as a CPU, but I find it much funner to have a second person around.

If you get right down to it, this is Mario All-Stars, Kirby style. I certainly recommend this game over any other Kirby game, hands down. However, I'll say this in my second review this week, if you're looking for hardcore platforming action, go get a Mario game.
