Doom 4?
Quake 4 came out. Yes, really. You didn't hear about it? Me either. No-one did. There wasnt a big fuss on any gaming magazines. No websites had big launch parties. Nothing. Why?
Because Quake 4 isn't special. I can imagine twitch-happy Quake fans shaking their already shaking hands at me about this. I said it: a John Carmack title isn't special. Doom was special. Doom 2... well, ok, it was moderately special (Kinda like how your 5th birthday was special but you don't remember it because you peed your pants and all your friends made fun of you). Doom 3 was unique and fun. But not Quake 4. Quake 4 runs on the Doom engine. I should have named the whole review that instead of "Doom 4". Why? Because it plays like Doom 3 with action. I s*** you not. They've taken an engine for a slow-but-fast paced shooter game pitting you in a Space Marine's individual helmet as he fights for survival, and now they place you in "Kain"'s helmet as a... space marine where you... err... fight for survival. Wait a minute. ![]() Well, all's not the same. In this game, you fight the Strogg, like you do in purpotedly every Quake game in existance. I really wouldnt know, I never thought Quake or Quake II were the hot s***, but whatever. You're the Space Marine Scout Kain as you go around killing the Strogg in space bases that look suspiciously like the Doom 3 terrain (Even to the point of being mostly dark indoors, switching out periodically to... you guessed it, dark red rocky terrain). I wouldn't have believed it unless I had seen it with my own eyes- it's no different. Okay, off the issue of it being a Doom 3 clone, Quake 4 is somewhat fun. I mean, you really can't argue against brainless, pretty-looking slaughter of some alien race or something. No-one really cares what you're shooting. Actually, I didn't even have a clue I was killing anything looking LIKE the Strogg until halfway through the game (I shoot everybody). It's just like that. The game has your standard weapons. The pistol. The Shotgun. The rifle.... wait a freaking minute. Same stuff as Doom 3, just reskinned! Yep, everything here is exactly like Doom 3, except, of course, for the "Higher grade" weapons. At least this time, the Shotgun kicks a debatable amount of ass, sending anything you point it at flying like an anorexic girl tied to a racecar. The same kind of story progression is here that was in Doom 3. Expect it like this: - Enter Level - Enemies! - Locked door. - Enemies! - Go find door key or button. - Enemies! - Found button, time to treck back to door. - Enemies! - Open door - End of level! Except, in Quake 4, you have annoying helpers to run around and throw their own little false military attitude into the situation. "Sarge'll be mad about this", "Go, scout!", "GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE!", and other things 40 year old black men are paid to say in the mic so the game sounds awesome. ![]() Okay, so maybe Quake 4 isnt so bad. The multiplayer is good, as it should be, but it still has too much Doom 3 in it to make it GOOD multiplayer. Remember how I bitched about Doom 3's multiplayer? Same s***, different colors (Green instead of blue). Still, it somewhat lives up to the Quake 4 name, being fast paced and all that good stuff. Then again, a game of checkers can be fast paced. Quake 4 deserved more than it got here. It deserved an engine of it's own. It deserved a more interesting story than the typical "KILL THOSE DAMN ALIENS/STROGG/THINGS" kinda thing. It deserved some weapons that don't play like Doom 3. Actually, it just deserved to not be related to Doom 3 at all. If Quake 4 was a fast paced, hardcore action shooter like the Mutliplayer of 3 used to be, I would definately urge you to go buy this game. However, Quake 4 misses this whole concept by leaps and bounds, which pretty much explains why no-one knew when it came out. Bad Carmack! Bad!
