  • aka Spider Man 2 beta, with a plot!

  • Author: Jamison

  • First off the game isn't that great. It's short, repetitive, narrow, bland, etc. They advertised it being a kick ass game. Well they screwed up. After playing spiderman 2 and a little bit of Ultimate Destruction, this didn't reach their standards. Anyway time to break the review down a bit.

The story is horribly rushed in the beginning. After 10 seconds of the beginning cinematic you learn that "the suit" can take over your body once you put it on. The suit is what Venom is. He Peter Parker's old freind in a suit that looks more like a liquid. Now learniong all of this in the first 10 seconds to me is a little too fast. I would like to get a little more info, but that's just me. Also Spider Man put it on for awhile but took it off afterwards. That is about 20 seconds within starting. The rest of the game luckily takes it back to a normal pace. It's an interesting story, but just a very shallow at explaining it in the beginning.

When the game finally starts, you're in a boss battle with venom. This is telling you that you are going to have alot of boss battles. Fighting was a bit shallow. You jsut go up to them, punch and kick them, then run like hell before they hit you. Every d*** boss fight is like that. There's a mix of other elements like "destroy the advertisements" and "dodge the fire," but not enough to completely make each fight interesting. When it isn't a boss fight, you will have to do certain objectives so you can get to a boss fight. It includes finding a medal, race, fight tour, and help citizens. Then you get the story mission, which includes a chase scene and boss fight. Then you repeat for several times. After that you beat the game.

Controls are pretty decent. Controlling Spider Man is pretty easy and fun sometimes. Going around the bland city and looking at the bland enviroments while sometimes commiting suicide for the hell of it. As for venom, it's annoying. He's basically the hulk, but with a whip style attack and you lose health. That's right, you lose health when you do nothing. You must absorb citizens just so you can keep going. It gets to be a pain when you chase someone. Since the person you chase doesn't stop, you end up losing track of him and fail the mission. Meaning if you got really far, then stopped just so you could live and failed, you have to start the whole d*** thing over again.

The graphics are okay depending what they are. Characters look great. Nice animations, great detail, and emotions. Something on the lines of watching the old Cel Shaded Spider Man show style characters. The world, on the other hand, are bland as hell. Buildings from a distance is usually just one color. Then you go up and BOOM black lines representing windows. The tall buildings were poorly made and shouldn't have crap out over a distance considering the lack of stuff in the disc. GTA:SA had the same problems, but forgiveable because of the hundred hours worth of stuff to do. In this game you get about 15, with actually coleceting EVERY d*** thing and doing every f***ing little objective. Otherwise the games is about 5-7 hours worth.

In the end this game doesn't stand out like the current great comic book style games. This game to me is more on the lines of a "Spider Man 2" beta rather than a actual game. It has the free roaming and everything, but just suckier.
