  • Another Golf MMORPG????

  • Author: Kirk
  • When I heard about Pangya, I couldn't believe my ears. How in the hell could the Korean community come out with a second online golf game? I mean, I didn't know we needed one, I certainly didn't know we needed TWO. Since when has golf been popular? Golf is played by old people with ugly shirts and stupid hats, not little chibi girls with big breasts.

Someone needs to tell the Koreans that, because that's what this is. Pangya is essentially a cute Shot Online, with cute characters, cute landscapes, and cute gameplay. Instead of doing what Shot Online did and trying to make the game more akin to a Tiger Woods meets a realistic Lineage type experience, they turned it into a Outlaw Golf meets Flyff, meaning there's a lot more fun, in general.

For example, Shot Online was a lot more mouse-based, while Pangya likes to play it a little cleaner by using primarily the keyboard. However, this is a little irritating to me, because I'd love to be able to swap out clubs with my scroll wheel or swing with my mouse... but no dice. However, Pangya does a good job of what it does, the controls being fast and responsive, something unique for a run-of-the-mill online game.

Pangya also fixes the annoyances of Shot Online quite easily. Instead of using that stupid lobby-esque theory that Shot Online adhered to, Pangya's GUI is basically a "Desktop", allowing you to connect to games, change settings, and the like. Very nice, very easy to use, and unique- it somewhat reminds me of ALTMIT from the .hack games.

However, when all is said and done, Pangya is no different than your run of the mill Korean MMORPG. Of course, pimping out your character in the best equipment possible is fun... but I never saw the use of it in this game. Why I wanted to do this was a question I didn't know. Even Shot Online had tournaments and the like to facilitate a competition feel, but Pangya just did not register that with me. It just failed to captivate me at all. I suppose if I had friends playing this or the like, it would be much different, but... I don't know.

Overall, I give Pangya 3 stars. A great game, but it just fails to make the game interesting enough to me. It seems like Korean games are run-of-the-mill nowadays- earn stuff, compete, earn stuff, compete, repeat... nothing innovative. It's sad when I say the only two Massively Multiplayer Golf Games aren't innovative... but it's true.
