Better than I thought.
***************************************
UPDATED JUNE 30th, AFTER MUCH PLAYING *************************************** Okay, I've come back with more than a simple opinion of Gunz. First off, I've discovered a lot more of the game, as well as some of the finer mechanics behind it. Maybe this has changed my mind. For the most part, no. GunZ is a great concept. Take the unrealistic gunplay of a game like Quake, add in flips like Enter the Matrix, add a psuedo-anime style like Devil May Cry, mix in a little swordplay like Dynasty Warriors, and add a structured online levelling system like Gunbound/Maple Story/Shot Online and you get GunZ. Confused yet? I'll expound. (+2 points for using a big word!) GunZ online plays quite a bit like a third person shooter. You control the game using WASD, while shooting with the mouse. Reload is R, Shift is block (I'll explain later), Jumping is the space bar, and switching weapons is with the scroll mouse or the numeric keys. Whoopee, they actually kept it to a system that any American gamer with a computer can use. The fighting has three main catagories of weapons, each with their own advantage (Forgive me if I really really round off some of these weapons): The guns, the swords, and the explosives. The guns are the bread-and-butter of the game. Dual SMGs, Hellsing-like dual pistols, and single-hand weapons abound in this game. Unfortunately, due to the way the game plays (Fast and unmercifully), there is only one weapon style that matters in this game: Dual SMGs. I picked Axiom Gun Preist because I like dual pistols, but I quickly found that everyone and their brother uses dual SMGs, so I bought some. Of course, the higher you get, you can purchase Shotguns, Rifles, and the like, but it seems like the main bread and butter tends to be the SMGs, purely because this isnt CS, this is GunZ. Oh, and as a side note for you realistic people, this game has no recoil, which is strange- but reload time takes long enough to somewhat compensate for this. ![]() The Swords are actually an interesting concept in the game, yet horribly supported. The swords act as essentially the "Knife" or "Crowbar" of other FPSes, but tend to do more damage, actually have the ability to block bullets and/or other hits, and just-look-cool. However, the main issue with them is that they do about as much damage as one shot from a gun, so any advantage you would have from say running up on someone and slashing is gone. Typically, FPSes like Counter-Strike quickly learned that the close-range melee tool should be basically an instant kill, because as the saying goes, "Bringing a knife to a gunfight" isnt the brightest idea in the world. However, you can get better swords, which is nice... but then again, you can get better guns with higher ammo capacity, so which would you choose? The third catagory is the smallest and most underused and it is the explosive catagory. Yes, your fighter can carry explosives ranging from HE grenades to smoke grenades, all of which cause genuine problems to the enemy. Unfortunately, the only REAL efficient grenade is of course the HE grenade, because the Smoke and Flashbang grenades are useless and hard to use, respectively. However, I see in the future that people will learn that instead of gunning down a group of people hanging out, maybe chucking in a devastating grenade in would be good, but... this is a beta, so we'll have to see. The game features an innovative "Bounty" and "Store" system, which adds a role playing factor to it all. Essentially, doing well in any game gets you experience points and bounty, which allow you to level up and buy equipment, respectively. Of course, levels play a big deal in keeping powerhouses out of newbie servers, as well as restricting people from buying insanely powerful weapons early in the game. As well, you can buy equipment to boost your HP and AP (Armor points), and buy rings because you really need to be effiminate in a shooting game. Now for the gameplay. Once I got my head out of my ass and started using dual SMGs, the game tends to be quite fun (EG: When it's fair.). Nothing's more fun than watching two people dual it out, then pick off both of them from afar. Nothing. Of course this is I think rather mean, but I've always felt that if it gets me precious EXP or bounty, screw honor. Factually, the game feels rather mobbish, and good players quickly learn that rushing in the middle of a group of people is foolish and suicidal. I've seen people taking the SMGs and sniping (See above where I mentioned there was no recoil), so essentially it really feels somewhat lost in a maze. The game allows you to flip around to your hearts content, however, which essentially makes this mechanic a very fun one: Step 1: Unload gun on enemy. Step 2: Hit R to reload, simultaneously flipping around like a madman. Step 3: When reloaded, go back to step 1. Of course, they're doing the same thing, so you're never in an easy position. The game does, however, compliment you for any stylistic moves you pull, so there always is that satisfaction of flipping around ALL the time and killing people that way, when they can't hit you. But I digress. ![]() Overall, for being FREE, GunZ is a game you absolutely must pick up. It plays on virtually any system (However, being 3D, "Any System" might have to scale it down a bit), is a great relief from Counter Strike or games of that sort, and... did I mention it was free? Yeah, I'm a free game whore. Go get this game at: http://gunzonline.com/ If any of you want to know, I'm KirkS on there. No, I'm not available to play usually, I get on when I have like 10 minutes of free time. Plus I'm a freaking newb.
