Korean Golf.
Okay, first of all, I have to admit wholeheartedly that I completely hate Mass Multiplayer games. They get on my nerves. The whole "Get 120000000000000000000000000000 GP to continue!" theory just pisses me off- make more content and make it more linear so I stop feeling lost. So, for the most part, I stay clear of reviewing online games like these, because I know good and well I'll just bitch all the time.
Now let's look at Shot Online. ADVANTAGE OF SHOT ONLINE OVER OTHER ONLINE GAMES #1: SHOT ONLINE IS AN ACTION GAME Yes folks, I'm not talking about ANOTHER online game based on swords and magic. I'm talking about an online game based on a real thing I can drive 5 minutes to and do: Golf. Yes, the golf where you take really wierd clubs and smash a ball across a nicely-cut green. This game actually takes the most boring game to go onto a PC (Like the old game Links, which was a borefest) and turns it completely around into an entertaining match game. ADVANTAGE OF SHOT ONLINE OVER OTHER ONLINE GAMES #2: SHOT ONLINE HAS LEVELS Well, this might be a DISadvantage to me, but it does give the game depth. Much like a Gran Turismo game, you slowly get cash and buy better clubs, clothes, and general gear to pimp out your virtual character. Everything from haircuts to gloves can be changed, but the main factor is your ability to buy better clubs, upgrading your abilities. Not only that, but your character "Levels up" in power, accuracy, and general ability to make your playing better (So basically, a newbie and an oldbie actually mean something, as opposed to a somewhat limited range game like Counter Strike). However, I personally thought this was somewhat limiting, because I would much rather have everyone on my level so actual skill was taken into consideration rather than how long I've been playing this game. ADVANTAGE OF SHOT ONLINE OVER OTHER ONLINE GAMES #3: YOU PICK IT UP FAST Yep, kids, believe it or not, 30 minutes with Shot Online somewhat guarantees a great working knowledge of the game. It doesnt guarantee perfection, but then again, it doesnt send you off into the actual game confused. The GUIs and controls are rather simple and mouse-based, but there is a suprising amount of stuff you can do to make the game play better (Such as hitting TAB to see where your ball should theoretically land it you hit it perfectly). Changing clubs may be a challenge until you realize they actually do have a great effect on your shots in certain ways, but the learning curve is so much better than in other online games where you sit for hours until you realize you're in the wrong place at the wrong time. DISADVANTAGE OF SHOT ONLINE OVER OTHER ONLINE GAMES #1: SHOT ONLINE IS TOO FRIENDLY Yep, I said it. When I get on the internet nowadays, I expect one of the following things to happen: 1. I get screamed at by a fatass in his mother's basement for sage-ing a thread 2. I get screamed at by a fatass in his mother's basement for TKing 3. I get screamed at by a fatass in his mother's basement for losing a game or 4. I get screamed at by a fatass in his mother's basement for being a noob. Number 4 really counts. For some reason, I actually like being treated like s*** as a noob. For one thing, it gives me incentive to learn fast and play well. For another thing, I'm guaranteed that there are people who are actually good at this game. For a third thing, it just feels like the internet. For some reason, everyone on Shot Online is waaaaay to friendly. From going "Good Shot" to "Wow, you beat me, good game!" I felt like someone was holding my p**** as I pissed into a shiny, friendly looking toilet. I don't know why feelings always relate me to my p****, its just this was the only correct metaphor I could really use. Everyone just wants to be NICE. So, I decided to spice things up a bit. ![]() ![]() DISADVANTAGE OF SHOT ONLINE OVER OTHER ONLINE GAMES #2: SHOT ONLINE TAKES TOO LONG Okay, who here can raise their hands and say that lengthening the time of a CS match when they are dead makes them happy. If anyone raised their hand, they're a dumbass. Because all of us dirty dirty internet-loving Americans like speed, we like Counterstrike, where round can last up to maybe a minute of "Tactical" slaughter. For some reason, Japan tends to think the opposite of this, and thinks we really want to sit there on our asses and watch someone mull over a shot they don't even make. I'm not kidding. Lets take a classic example. I played 18 holes on the beginner course. Now, because I must be a stupid fast-loving American, I ASSUMED that 18 holes would last something like... 18 minutes. Nooooope. 18 holes lasted me about three hours. Granted it levelled me up twice, but let's do some calculations here. It took 10 minutes PER HOLE. Now, hold on here. With that calculation, I could go out, drive 5 minutes to the golf course, spend that 3 hours playing golf, come home, drink a soda, go the bathroom, watch 30 minutes of some anime crap I downloaded on my computer, sleep, and maybe go be a peeking tom for a little while. Let's be honest here- this is not a quick game. Hell, I'm not really sure how ANYONE has time for this game. OVERALL Overall, this game is a decent game to play, especially since it is an open beta. Sure, the game is simplistic and poorly translated from Korean. Sure, everyone on here is as disgustingly friendly as if a big bunch of Kindergarden teachers gave me a big bear hug. Regardless, if you have the time, a 3D video card, and if you basically wanna play the equivelant of wearing checkered pants and driving a 10 MPH Golf Cart, download this game.
