  • Killzone: Liberation is the sequel to the PlayStation 2 video game Killzone. It is due for release on the PSP October 31, 2006. It is not a port of the original, nor a lesser version of the much anticipated PS3 launch game, but an entirely new chapter to add to the Killzone epic.

Taking a "pseudo-isometric" camera angle, it is set to be a much more tactical version than that of its older brother, but will also have short bursts of pure action. Killzone for the PS2, was more of a run and gun, seek cover type game with bursts of action. Killzone: Liberation will take on a much more tactical approach, but with a more 'on-the-go' friendly nature. Guerrilla has stated that the reason for this is because previous PSP titles, such as Konami's Coded Arms, have failed to show any strengths in producing a first person shooter, and they didn't believe that a first-person shooter such as Killzone, with respects to the PSP's control capabilities, would suit the console all that well.

In addition to the new view-point, Killzone: Liberation will feature the ability to look for the enemy's movement patterns and to find the best path to victory. However, this does not indicate that the game will be entirely stealth-based, as Killzone: Liberation will include all of the incredible weapons of the original, including new chainguns and rocket launchers. Another new, and interesting weapon will be the rumored explosive-tipped crossbow.

One weapon, which has been shown in many concept pictures, is an electro-truncheon, which appears to be a melee weapon used by the Helghast. This weapon will do physical damage if they are attacked with it.

Since the game may, in fact involve some tactical-espionage, the developers of the game have added a mechanic that will show what alert stage the enemy is currently in. The red lights coming out of the Helghast's goggles, will change depending on the alert stage.

Seemingly still taking place during The Second Helghan War, the player will again assume the role of captain Jan Templar, in an attempt to rescue prisoners behind enemy lines from under the nose of General Metrac, who is using brutal measures in the continuing war in order to gain the upper hand. The game will feature the same array of weapons, a return to some of the old locations (most of the screenshots released look suspiciously like the docks from the original), and the return of the Helghast soldiers.

The character Rico (who wielded the chaingun/rocket launcher) in the original game will appear to help Jan Templar in "nasty" situations throughout his journey.
