    INTERVIEW ONE: Tensaihime
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long have you been into Cosplay and Anime in general?

I've liked anime since I was ten or eleven. (I'm eighteen-and-a-half now.) I've only thought about cosplaying since I was in college, talking to someone else who was thinking about doing it.

Why did you get hooked into it?

Well, at the time it was really different to me. Everyone's eyes were funny, and I was like "hey, that girl's hair is blue and that dude can fly! Sweet!" (I was watching Dragonball Z at the time.) Then my brother got a promotional Pokemon tape from his Nintendo Power subscription and we both went "Aww, look at all the cute little guys!" And there were so many genres I could choose from. Depending on what show I was watching, I could see adorable creatures, action-packed conflicts, or awesome giant robots. Plus, the music is great. I like to sing "Give a Reason" in the shower. XD

What makes Cosplaying special over other "Geekdom"s?

You can talk about your Special Edition Super Gold Holofoil Dark Magician all you want, but when you dress up as said Dark Magician, now THAT'S dedication. XD

How do you think the Cosplay community in general is going? Is it growing or going stale?

I think it's growing along with technology. I mean, with email and online forums, you can get with people thousands of miles away and say "Hey, we're gonna do a Super Mario RPG cosplay group. Anybody wanna be Yaridovich?" (I still have to play that game, but anyhow...) And that one guy who put real lights on his Gundam costume. As technology grows, people can incorporate aspects of it into their cosplay.

On the topic of costumes, how long does it typically take to make any given costume?

Depends on who you want to be and how good you want your outfit to be. I thought I could pull off my costume in one weekend, but boy was I wrong. I'd say give yourself at least six months, more if you want some special prop like armor or a staff or something.

Do you prefer making the costumes themselves or wearing them?

Wearing! I love crazy photo ops.

Do you think it's more important for a cosplayer to look good or just enjoy themselves doing it?

I think you should look your best and make your fandom look good doing it. But if your outfit didn't come out just right, you shouldn't let that spoil your fun. I forgot to make a sword for my character, but I still had a heck of a time at AWA.

What's your opinions on the furry cosplayers who think of cosplaying as more of a sexual thing?

...at least they're being creative about it. Hee hee! I guess as long as nobody gets hurt, it's okay with me.

Can Cosplay be considered the same as fashion and design, or is it more (or less) than that?

In some cases, it truly is an amazing feat of design, like that one guy who had the working Transformer costume. With many characters, you have to figure out exactly what to do with their hair, and if you want something like Miroku's staff or the Master Sword, you need to figure out how to make it look realistic but still be able to carry it around.

If you could give someone who wants to get started in Cosplay advice, what would it be?

Get started nice and early! Earlier I said six months, but nine would be even better. And make sure to get quality materials. Sometimes you'll get lucky with cardboard, but you don't want your outfit to fall apart.
