4. Install boosting programs
Tons of programs have recently come out with the intention of making your computer faster. RAM wipers, overclocking programs, registry editors... all of them fall under the prepercieved myth that installing one program will make your computer 3,000 times faster. This will NEVER HAPPEN. EVER. However, programs can be useful for unlocking things you couldn't normally do on your own. Some good programs to use:
Cablenut
http://www.cablenut.com/
Cablenut is a simple program that has the ability to tamper with your internet settings if you run a standard Ethernet card. What's nice about this program is that you can go online on one of many websites, check what your optimal settings are, plug them into Cablenut, and it will do it for you automatically. This, while being a little strange, is much easier than doing it yourself in a Registry editor.
Lavasoft RegHance/Processwatch/Ad-Aware

Anything that comes from Lavasoft is godly, and these programs are no exception. RegHance allows you more control over editing your registry instead of going through the horrible "Regedit" program availible by default. Processwatch is a wonderful program allowing you to monitor what programs are running on your computer- so nothing extraneous is running. Ad-aware, the mighty Ad-aware, is THE BEST program for keeping Spyware and Adware off your computer. All of these programs, while slightly pricy, are worth their weight in gold.
TweakXP
http://www.tweakxp.com/
TweakXP is not only a program, it's a huge, wonderful website, along with tons of other programs and tips to make your computer run like it SHOULD. There is no other website, except maybe Annoyances.org, that has as much raw information and help about tweaking your PC as it should be. There is absolutely no excuse for not getting help from this website for your problems, and I reccomend it 100%.
Annoyances.org
http://www.annoyances.org
This isn't necessarilly a program, but if any of the above can't help you enough, this website can. It is the DEFINITIVE guide on any problem I've ever experienced in Windows XP. While TweakXP is more geared to making your efficient computer run more efficiently, Annoyances.org seem to be more geared toward fixing your PC, a great commodity in case, all of a sudden, "Windows stops working".
If you absolutely must go hunting for programs on your own, take the following advice to heart:
- Overclocking programs are DANGEROUS. NEVER use them.
- Ram cleaners never work. While they sound great face-value, they end up using more RAM than they save.
- If something has a free trial, use it. Don't assume the claims made by some "Mystical speed up utility" work unless you've seen proof.
