  • Good Lord 5: Otogirisou

The second part is the fact that it isn't freaking scary enough. Sure, the text can be as scary as it wants, but that just turns this game into a "Choose-your-own-adventure" novel with crappy music and backgrounds. Literally, I saw no demons, spirits, or even creaking windows in this game. The environments were supposed to be scary, but I suppose the text made them better. I don't know, I would have at least wanted to be suprised or something.

Oh, and want to know my biggest pet peeve with the game? You seemingly can't die. If you know about the old games like Deja Vu and ESPECIALLY Shadowgate, you know that even a small mistake means you die, period. This kept the game fresh and interestingly irritating, because unless you saved, you ended up going waaaay back to the start of the game. In Otogirisou, you seem to not die. Sure, when I "Lost" the game I died (For the record, it appeared I caught myself on fire and jumped off the roof), but you would have thought that the vengeful spirits that seemingly didn't appear in the game would have picked me off. Hell, I went through the whole house (Well, I didn't choose to, but..), turned on the shower, screwed around with the sink, messed around in the bedroom... all those things you'd think would kill me. Hell, I was expecting a psuedo-"Psycho" scene when I was in the shower. But nope, you seem to be invincible to demons, inner and outer.

I think this game deserves more credit than I'm giving it. Sure, part of the reason I'm slamming this game is the part I DID translate was useless so halfway through the game I just made up story. Sure, I'm an EVIL AMERICAN, so I suppose I was looking for a little more fright. But still, this game gets its own special spot in the Good Lord hall of fame- don't bother with it.
