  • This is the game that started it all. OK, Wolfenstien 3D was the first, but Doom made FPSs popular. The collecter's edition contains Ultimate Doom (Doom 1 plus a extra campaign), Doom 2, and Final Doom. I think the new versions als contain Doom 3 trailers and screenshots, but I'm not sure.

Before I begin, I have to tell you that you must use the Doom 95 launcher and pump up the resolution. If you don't, you won't be able to see anything. Also configure the config to be your standard WASD config. Beware though. I didn't have problems, but Kirk did. Perhaps computers are different. Anyway, on to the review.

Ultimate Doom is every bit as good as it was back then. The levels are decently designed, but its very easy. For some reason, I had no trouble blowing through the campaigns on the "Bring It On" difficulty. I didn't like the fourth campaign though, it didn't seem to be of higher quality.

Doom 2 is also very good, but the levels don't seem to carry momentum. After a while, the levels run together and they don't fell inspired. There are new enemies and the double barreled shotgun, and they are worthy additions indeed. Doom 2 isn't bad.

Final Doom is my favorite. You get twice the content of Doom 2, which translates to 60+ levels. No new enemies, but the level design is very good for the first 10 levels. See id innovate with their tools at hand and create a great experience. I should warn you though, the Plutonia campaign is very, very difficult. You MUST play this game with a "Hurts so good massa" mentality. The first level alone will test your skills, and it just gets harder from there. The TNT campaign is a tad easier, but I found that one a little boring. Unless you are seriously good at Doom, you will be met with death over and over again. Become one with the double barreled shotgun. Final Doom breaks the rules set by Doom 1 and 2. What used to hurt you no longer does (like some of the toxic sludge), and there are some other oddities, but who cares? A great game for those who can handle the difficulty.

The weapons. All the weapons in Doom are fair. The pistol is a suitibly crappy weapon, the single barrel shotgun is OK, and the DBS is the mack daddy. The chain gun has its perks, and the rocket launcher blows stuff up. My personal favorite is the plasma gun, and the BFG 9000 is powerful, but not reliable at all. For some reason the programming kept the BFG from being the best it could be. What a pity. Yes there's a chain saw, but most of the time, using it would get you killed.

There is a deathmatch and co-op, but I haven't tried either. No matter, as the single player is good enough.

Doom is a worthy game, but I can't give it a perfect because the levels lose steam after a while, and it is repetitive. No to mention the graphics are rough around the edges. The controls stink if you can't change them to the WASD format. Still, it deserves one mushroom. A great precursor to Doom 3. I can recomend this game to pretty much every one. Enjoy.
